I have been into pokemon for about my entire life up to this point but it took me more than half of that time to figure out who my favorite pokemon really was. When I was a kid, I just randomly pointed to a pokemon and decided "Everyone has a favorite, so that one will be." That pokemon at the time was Growlithe.

I had no connection to Growlithe back then, and eventually my "favorite" got switched over to Bidoof, and at that time I was in my early teens. I liked Bidoof and has a bit of a stronger liking towards that pokemon, but it was nothing crazy. It was more just a safe choice for when anyone would ask me if I had a favorite pokemon because I did not want to just say "Not really" when asked the question by fellow fans.

Eventually, highschool came around and thats when I started to get very serious about pokemon. Before highschool my enjoyment of the franchise was very loose and I just collected a few cards, I had played a few games here and there with every mainline release, but when I was introduced to the human characters of the franchise I was hooked and way more intensely than I ever had been before.
